My MacBook Does Not Start – How to Fix?

Having troubles turning on your MacBook? When your MacBook does not start, check and apply the following fixes step by step. With one or more of these steps, you can get your iMac or MacBook to start properly again.

1- Check the Power Supply

Check whether your Mac is properly connected to the main or not. If you have a MacBook, check if the battery is sufficiently charged and the light on the charging connector that is actually called “Magsafe” is on. That light indicates that the charger is functioning properly.

2- Reset the SMC

When the System Management Controller gets confused, it stop operating. It is best to reset the System Management Controller to make sure the SMC is working properly. You can do this in the following way:

  • With an iMac, disconnect the Mac from the power supply, wait a minute, and then reconnect the Mac.
  • For a MacBook, simultaneously press the Shift-Control-Option (left) keys and the power button, hold down all of these keys for five seconds, and then try starting the MacBook again.

3- Resetting the NVRAM and PRAM memory

NVRAM and PRAM memory stores Various system settings. If the Mac stops booting, the NVRAM or PRAM memory may be corrupt.

You can reset the NVRAM and PRAM as follows:

  • Shut down the Mac
  • Press the Command + Option + P + R keys simultaneously
  • Start up the Mac
  • Hold down the 4 keys until you hear the startup chime (Chime) a second time, then release them.

4- Boot into Safe Mode

Safe Mode (also known as Safe Boot) is a way to start up a Mac that performs certain checks and does not automatically load or open certain software. When you start the Mac in safe mode, the following occurs:

  • The startup disk is verified and attempts are made to troubleshoot directories if necessary.
  • Only the required kernel extensions are loaded.
  • Automatic opening of start-up and login components is prevented.
  • User-installed fonts are disabled.
  • Font caches, the kernel cache and other system cache files are deleted.

If your Mac has a problem and that problem disappears when you start the Mac in safe mode, you may be able to isolate the cause.

5- Startup In Safe Mode

  • Shut down the Mac
  • Press the Shift key
  • Turn on the Mac
  • After hearing the start-up sound, you can release the Shift key

Your iMac will now boot in safe mode. You will now see a progress indicator on your screen. If you have solved your problem then restart the Mac normally.

6- Restore time machine backup

If your Mac does not start it can be a serious problem. The data on your hard disk may be damaged. This can be restored with a backup of Timemachine. Via Timemachine you ensure that your system boots up and works properly. For start-up see point 5.

7- Boot from the recovery partition menu

Booting from the recovery partition gives you access to 4 programs

  • Start the recovery partition menu
  • Shut down the Mac
  • Hold down both the Command (cmd) key and the R key (Command + R),
  • Turn on the Mac
  • When you hear the start-up sound, you can release the 2 keys
  • You are now in the recovery partition menu

Then try to install the system again through the recovery partition. You can do this by pressing “Reinstall macOS”. Then follow the steps on the screen. This continues without loss of your data. Although I always advise you to make a good backup of all your macOS apps.

My Mac restart after a few minutes

Usually this indicates a video or disc problem.

  • Video chip repair
  • Install SSD
  • Replace disk

My Mac starts up with a Question Mark?

If your Mac starts with this symbol, it means that there is a problem with your system. The storage medium in your Mac (hard disk or SSD) may not be readable. Format or refresh the storage medium. In case of a problem with your system, you can try to boot from the recovery partition, see above, and install the system again. If that does not work, chances are high that the hard disk or SSD is broken. In that case, it’s best to bring the Mac to Mac Support.
