1. Know the age of your target audience

Your target audience of young readers is not only limited to preschoolers instead it contains readers ranging towards teenagers as well. It is merely a misconception to limit children’s book for readers younger than the age 15 but that is not the case. Children’s book range from conceptual stories to picture books and then encompasses comic books as well.

Once you know who your target audience is, the hassle of content curation and formation becomes easy as well. Analyze and research what your readers would prefer reading and only then begin to write.

2. Keep a lookout for the competition

You might not be the only writer focusing on children’s book instead a vast part of the writing and book industry tends to focus solely on young readers. If you release a book that is similar to what your competitors have released already then it will be no different than reinventing the wheel from scratch.

You might have the content for your book but if you do not have the relevant artwork, since children’s demand for visuals content, you can always choose to work with a team of children book illustrators. 3. Choose the right vocabulary and speech

Children would surely not be equipped with immaculate grammar and vocabulary but that is the best age to make them learn new things. Children tend to prefer images and visual more so you can add relevant pictures alongside any new word you have used for better and quicker understanding.

This notion means you have to pick words, phrases, and sentences very wisely and intricately. Do not assume that this hurdle would be any different in a picture book instead such books have less content so you would need to pay even more attention.

5. Keep it short and interesting

The target length of your book also varies according to the age, interest, and demographics of your audience. Picture books might be a favorite amongst preschoolers but young teens would hold more interest in reading comics.

Once you have settled on the audience you intend to cater to then the next step would be to set a page count or limit. An approximate of 20 to 30 pages is a defined number of pages for children’s picture books but if the book contains more textual content then the number is bound to increase accordingly.
